Introduction of the Cost-Efficient Pennguard 88 Lining System
Project overview
W-Solutions supplied a specially developed Pennguard 88 lining solution for the new LP1 chimney constructed by our longstanding customer CRI of Milan.
The project required a durable corrosion-protection system suitable for a chimney operating downstream of a flue gas desulphurisation system. At the same time, strict budget limitations made the cost of the lining an important consideration.
After evaluating the anticipated operating conditions and commercial requirements, Pennguard 88 was developed and introduced as a cost-efficient lining system specifically designed for this FGD chimney application.
The lining was installed in 2026, providing the new chimney with durable protection while delivering substantial savings compared with more costly alternatives.

The challenge
Chimneys operating downstream of an FGD system are exposed to a demanding internal environment. Although flue gas desulphurisation reduces atmospheric emissions, the process can create highly corrosive conditions within the chimney.
Low flue-gas temperatures can lead to condensation on the internal steel chimney flues. This condensate contains aggressive acidic components attacking the steel/concrete and shortening the service life of the chimney.
A suitable lining therefore had to provide reliable protection under the anticipated FGD operating conditions.
The technical solution also had to satisfy the project’s strict budget requirements. The challenge was not simply to identify a lining capable of resisting the operating environment, but to develop a solution that achieved the required durability without making the overall chimney construction uneconomical.
A solution developed around the application
W-Solutions assessed the operating environment, chimney design and commercial constraints as an integrated engineering challenge.
The industry standar, Pennguard 55 was over qualified for this application and could have increased the project cost without delivering proportional additional value. Conversely, selecting a lower-cost system without considering the actual exposure conditions could have introduced an unacceptable long-term corrosion risk.

Introduction of Pennguard 88
