PENNCHEM™ Structural Glazed Tile Lining System
Chemical-resistant protection for FGD absorbers, tanks, towers, scrubbers and process equipment
What is the PENNCHEM Tile System?
The PENNCHEM Tile System is a structurally anchored, chemical-resistant ceramic tile lining for seawater FGD absorbers, wet-limestone FGD absorbers, industrial scrubbers, tanks, towers, pulp chests and other process equipment.
PENNCHEM combines a smooth, non-stick process surface with a robust mechanical anchoring system. Integrally extruded ribs secure the glazed ceramic tiles into the supporting concrete or grout, creating a durable lining that becomes an integral part of the equipment.
Properly engineered and installed PENNCHEM systems can provide a service life of more than 30 years. Extended warranty options are also available for qualifying projects delivered under W-Solutions’ specified engineering, installation and quality-control requirements.

Structural glazed tile lining design
PENNCHEM tiles are manufactured from dense, vitrified ceramic and finished with a durable factory-applied glaze.
Integrally extruded ribs on the back of each tile form a strong mechanical anchor when concrete or grout is placed behind the lining. This creates an integrated structure rather than a lining that depends solely on surface adhesion.
ENNCHEM can be incorporated into reinforced-concrete tanks and towers or installed against steel vessels using an engineered set-and-back-pour method.
The tiles are installed with a compatible chemical-resistant mortar. Where required, a corrosion-resistant membrane can be incorporated behind the tile lining to provide an additional barrier against chemical penetration.
Features and benefits
Chemical-resistant ceramic surface:
The dense vitrified ceramic body and glazed process surface provide durable protection against corrosive liquids, gases and demanding industrial process conditions.
Smooth, non-stick finish:
The factory-applied glaze helps reduce scale, gypsum, pulp and other process-material accumulation. Its smooth surface makes equipment easier to clean and can help maintain efficient process flow.
Structurally anchored tile system:
Extruded ribs form a secure mechanical connection with the concrete or grout back-pour, integrating the tile lining into the supporting structure.
Abrasion and impact resistance:
The robust ceramic construction withstands mechanical wear, process movement and industrial cleaning in demanding operating environments.
More than 30 years of service life:
PENNCHEM is designed for long-term corrosion protection. Correctly selected, engineered and installed systems can achieve more than 30 years of service in demanding industrial environments.
Extended warranty options:
Extended warranties are available for qualifying PENNCHEM projects. Warranty terms depend on the application, operating conditions, system design, installation scope and agreed inspection and quality-control programme.
Discuss your application
Every industrial process environment is different. W-Solutions evaluates the chemical exposure, operating temperature, substrate and equipment design before recommending a complete PENNCHEM lining system.
Applications
Seawater FGD absorber linings
PENNCHEM provides durable corrosion protection for seawater flue gas desulfurization absorbers and associated gas-cleaning equipment. These systems are exposed to continuously wet conditions, chlorides, acidic condensates and changing operating temperatures. PENNCHEM provides a dense, chemically resistant internal surface, while its anchored construction creates a robust connection to the absorber structure. The smooth glazed surface also helps reduce deposits and makes the absorber easier to inspect and clean.
Wet-limestone FGD absorber linings
Wet-limestone FGD absorbers operate under severe chemical and mechanical conditions. Their internal surfaces may be exposed to acidic flue gas condensates, limestone slurry, gypsum formation, abrasion and continuous wet service. PENNCHEM combines chemical resistance with a hard, smooth ceramic process surface. This helps protect the absorber structure against corrosion and abrasion while reducing the tendency for gypsum and process deposits to adhere to the lining. The system can be engineered for absorber walls, tanks and other areas requiring long-term resistance to wet FGD operating conditions.
Industrial scrubbers
PENNCHEM provides chemical and mechanical protection for industrial scrubbers and related gas-cleaning equipment. The structurally anchored tile construction is particularly suited to large process vessels requiring a robust, chemical-resistant internal surface.
Pulp and paper process equipment
PENNCHEM tile linings are used in pulp chests, high-density towers, brown-stock chests, white-water chests, wire pits, couch pits and screen chests. The smooth glazed surface helps reduce fibre and process-material build-up while protecting the underlying structure against chemical exposure and mechanical wear.
Chemical tanks and process vessels
The PENNCHEM Tile System can be incorporated into new reinforced-concrete structures or installed against suitable steel tanks and vessels using an engineered back-pour construction.
Thickeners and clarifiers
Its strong, smooth and chemically resistant surface makes PENNCHEM suitable for industrial thickeners, clarifiers and other liquid-treatment or solids-separation equipment.
New construction and rehabilitation
PENNCHEM can be engineered for new tanks and towers or used to rehabilitate existing process equipment. The appropriate construction depends on the condition of the substrate, operating environment and required service life.
Long-term lining performance
PENNCHEM combines two essential functions in one industrial lining system: a durable chemical-resistant process surface and a robust mechanical connection to the supporting structure.
The vitrified ceramic tile resists chemical attack, abrasion and process wear. Its glazed finish helps limit accumulation, while its ribbed rear profile forms a strong anchor within the concrete or grout back-pour.
With appropriate engineering, installation and maintenance, PENNCHEM systems can deliver more than 30 years of reliable service. This long operating life can reduce maintenance requirements, unplanned outages and total lifecycle cost compared with lining systems requiring more frequent repair or replacement.
